All About Birth Photography: Your Questions Answered

By Becky Langseth, Seattle Birth Photographer

Thinking about having your birth story documented? Birth photography is a wonderful way to capture the raw emotion and beauty of childbirth. If you're curious about what it entails, you're not alone! Here are some common questions answered to help you understand more about this unique form of photography.

What Exactly is Birth Photography?

Birth photography is all about capturing the moments leading up to, during, and after childbirth. A birth photographer specializes in documenting the emotions, strength, and beauty of the birthing process, creating a timeless keepsake for you and your family. As a Seattle area birth photographer, my favorite moment to capture is the moment you first hold your baby and the reaction you have, whether it’s shock, joy or tears. It’s just so powerful!

Why Should I Consider Hiring a Birth Photographer?

Hiring a birth photographer allows you to fully immerse yourself in the birthing experience while someone else captures those precious moments. This way, your support partner can be in the moment (and photos) too, and not stress over finding their phone/camera while missing a moment. A birth photographer also guarantees beautiful, professional photos! No bad iPhone snaps here.

When is the Best Time to Book a Birth Photographer?

It's a good idea to book your birth photographer early in your pregnancy to ensure their availability. Many birth photographers limit the number of births they take per month, so securing your spot early is recommended.

How Do I Find the Right Birth Photographer?

This involves some research. Look for photographers who specialize in birth photography (fully understanding the on-call nature of the work) and have a style that resonates with you. Asking for recommendations from friends, family, or your healthcare provider can also be helpful.

What Should I Look for in a Birth Photographer?

When choosing a birth photographer, consider their style, experience, and personality. You'll want someone who makes you feel comfortable and understands your vision for the photos. Most birth photographers (including me) offer meet & greet video calls, to make sure you are a good fit for each other, and to give you a chance to ask all the questions!

Will the Birth Photographer Be Present During a C-Section?

Yes, a birth photographer can be present during a c-section, depending on the hospital's policies. Currently in the Seattle area, most hospitals allow two support people to accompany you into the OR.

What if I Have Specific Requests or Preferences?

You will have an opportunity to communicate your specific requests and preferences with your birth photographer. This includes any particular moments you want captured, as well as your comfort level with certain types of photos including modest angles or raw imagery.

How Should I Prepare for Birth Photography?

Preparing for birth photography involves discussing your birth plan with your photographer, ensuring they have access to the birthing space, and talking about your preferences.

If you care about what to wear, I recommend wearing your own gown, getting your nails done, and wearing a cute, comfy bra if modesty is important to you. Partners should wear plain, non-graphic t-shirts, and avoid baseball caps (it blocks their face.)

However, these are only suggestions. You wear (or don’t wear) what is preferable for YOU!

What about Birth Films?

Video is becoming more and more popular at birth. Many birth photographers also offer videography. Photos are a great way to help you remember, but video helps you relive it! (Think hearing your baby’s first cry again!)

Overall, birth photography is an incredible way to capture the journey of childbirth. By hiring a qualified birth photographer, you can ensure that your birth story is documented in a meaningful and respectful way. After all, birth only happens once!
